Author: Elliott, Mary
Biography:
ELLIOTT, Mary, formerly Belson (1794?-1870: OCCL)
A prolific writer for children who started writing in her teens and invariably published with Darton. Belson was her maiden name, the one she published under until 1820. No marriage record has as yet been found. Besides her many verse titles, she wrote prose fiction and non-fiction, including for example Confidential Memoirs: or, Adventures of a Parrot, a Greyhound, a Cat, and a Monkey (1821) and Female Biography, or Virtue and Talent Exemplified . . . (1822). Individual poems from her Grateful Tributes were often published anonymously and some with the same titles (e.g. "My Sister") are sometimes ascribed to her erroneously in library catalogues.
