Biography:
Doane, George Washington (1799-1859: WBIS)
He was born in Trenton NJ to Jonathan and Mary (Higgins) Doane; his father was a builder and contractor. Having graduated from Union College, Schenectady, in 1818, he went on to the General Theological Seminary in New York City, where he also ran a boys' school. He was ordained in 1821 and served as a priest in New York until his appointment as Professor of Belles Lettres and Rhetoric at Washington College (later Trinity College) in Hartford CT and then (from 1828) minister at Trinity Church in Boston. In 1827 he established the Episcopal Watchman magazine; through it and later periodical writing, he became a leader in the High Church party. He married a widow, Eliza Greene Callahan Perkins, in 1829; they had one son. In 1832 he was elected Bishop of New Jersey, a position he held until his death. Doane edited the first American edition of Keble's Christian Year. He was also the author of several popular hymns. (ANBO 13 Sept. 2018; Benson)
