Author: Colesworthy, Daniel Clement

Biography:

COLESWORTHY, Daniel Clement (1810-93: Hollis)

Printer, author, and bookseller, Colesworthy was born in Portland ME, the second son of Daniel Pecker Colesworthy and Anna (Collins) Colesworthy. He was apprenticed to a printer at fourteen. His first publications were periodicals, including a Sunday-school paper, and most of his writings were addressed to a juvenile audience. He ran a bookshop in Portland, as did his brother Samuel H. Colesworthy, who acted also as his publisher for some years. Daniel eventually moved to Massachusetts: he lived (and died) in Chelsea, and owned two bookshops in Boston. He and his wife Mary Jane Bowers had eight children, one of whom, William Gibson Colesworthy, went into the business and took over his father's bookstore in Cornhill until his own death in 1907.
