Author: Wright, Charles

Biography:

WRIGHT, Charles (fl 1781)

Wright’s only known publication, Poems on Several Occasions (1781), is an earnest attempt at spiritual reform intended, as the title-page indicates, to “enlighten the vain notions of an abandoned and lukewarm age.” It contains lofty and pious reflections on such moral subjects as innocence, happiness, and contentment, but few clues as to the identity of the author. In a preface “to the reader” Wright indicates that the volume is a sample and that “a larger and more elaborate performance” is ready for release if the first effort meets with approval. Since no more followed, it seems that he did not receive enough encouragement. The work was published at Yarm, North Yorkshire, where an infant Charles Wright was born and died and buried in 1780, very probably his son, but public records shed no further light on the author.
