WOODWARD, John H. (1778-1813: ancestry.com)
Born in Tolland CT to Eleanor (Benton) and Aaron Woodward, John Harris Woodward moved at some point to South Carolina and settled in Charleston. His death certificate gives his occupation as "merchant," but he was also for a time a schoolmaster with an academy in Charleston (advertised in 1808) and a contributor of poems to the Charleston Times under the pseudonyms "Timon" or "G. Omicron." In 1810 he wrote to Thomas Jefferson proposing a biographical study of eminent Americans and seeking names of suitable candidates, but no such volume appeared before he died of consumption, apparently on a visit to a friend, in Savannah GA on 6 Mar. 1813. He left a widow and two children but the name of his wife has not been found. (ancestry.com 5 Mar. 2021; "John H. Woodward to Thomas Jefferson, 29 January 1810," Founders Online) HJ
