Biography:

WOLCOTT, Eliza (1795-1832: ancestry.com)

The third of six children of Lucy (Hoffman) and Thomas Goodsell Wolcott of Branford CT, she was according to her prefatory note induced by an "esteemed friend" to collect and publish her poems together with those of her deceased sister Sarah (q.v.), together with a family memoir. The family was well established: the father was a Yale graduate and the only son became a doctor. Two of the married daughters had died young as had their two children, and were buried in the Zion Episcopal churchyard in Branford; in 1830, their mother Lucy joined them. The memoir consists mainly of accounts of these and related deaths. Eliza herself lived only two years longer and is buried in the same place. The last surviving member of the family was the father, who lived until 1847. (ancestry.com 25 Feb. 2021; The Two Sisters' Poems and Memoirs [1830] 141-50) HJ
