Biography:
WODROW, John (d 1788: Scott)
It is not known when and where he was born, nor where he earned his MA. He was licensed as a minister by the presbytery of Dunoon on 27 Sept. 1756 and ordained on 4 Oct. 1758. Wodrow became the minister of the church at Kildalton on Islay, Argyllshire, and held that post until his death in 1788. He married Alice Campbell on 13 Oct. 1768; she died on 2 Oct. 1823 and was buried with her husband in Kilnaughton churchyard, Islay. Wodrow published Carthon, The Death of Cuchullin, and Dar-thula. Attempted in English Verse from Mr. Macpherson’s Translation in 1769. The preface to his version in “English heroic verse” of James Macpherson’s (q.v.) Fingal is uncompromising in asserting the authenticity of the Ossian poems. (Hew Scott, Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae [1868]; ancestry.co.uk 10 July 2024; Oban Times 20 Sept. 1915) SR
