Biography:

WINTER, Susan, formerly VINCE (c. 1800-69: findmypast.com)

Winter was the married name of Susan (or Susanna) Vince, born in Dedham, Essex, about 1800. No birth record has been found, but the notice of her marriage, newspaper items, and information in the Census of 1841, 1851, and 1861 provide solid evidence of her later life. John Vince, wine merchant, aged 75 (born 1766), who was part of her household in 1841, was most probably her father. Her only publication was the volume of parlour-games in which she collaborated with Elizabeth Vince (q.v.) in 1829. She married Joseph William Winter (b 1799), a chemist in Manningtree, Essex, at Dedham on 30 Sept. 1825 and had six children with him, five of whom—two boys and three girls--were still living when he died suddenly on 28 Nov. 1837. That was the turning-point of her life. She decided to take over the business herself and continued to run it until her death on 10 Dec. 1869. At the time of the 1861 Census she was the head of a household that included three unmarried daughters, all governesses, and one unmarried son who was her “druggist assistant”; one child boarder; and one servant. She was buried along with her husband at St. Michael and All Angels, Manningtree, where there is a monumental inscription.
