Biography:

WINSOR, William (1786-1815: ancestry.com)

The son of Duty Winsor and his first wife Abigail Steere, William Winsor was born into a long-established family in Smithfield RI. He attended the Providence Academy and then graduated AB from Brown University. If his poem read to the United Brothers' debating society of the university in 1811 was a graduation poem, he was a little older than the usual graduate, but it may have been, as the title-page suggests, an occasional poem produced for an anniversary. He died in Smithfield, unmarried, before he was thirty--the cause of death not specified--and was buried in the Winsor Lot of the Smithfield cemetery. A notebook that he kept 1805-10, called a "commonplace book" but containing original essays and verse, is held by the Manuscripts Division of the Rhode Island Historical Society.
