Biography:

WINSLOW, Benjamin Davis (1815-39: ancestry.com)

The son of Abigail (Callahan) and Benjamin Davis, he was born in Boston. His father was a merchant; his mother died when he was six. He was baptised in 1830, his godfather on the occasion being the Rev. (later Bishop) George Doane who took a fatherly interest in him for the rest of his life. (Appleton calls him an uncle but by Doane's own testimony they did not encounter one another until 1828.) Winslow graduated from Harvard in 1835 and went on to study at the Episcopal General Theological Seminary in New York, being ordained deacon in 1838 and priest in 1839. Doane took him from the Seminary to become his assistant at St. Mary's Church in Burlington NJ. On 8 Nov. 1838 Winslow married Augusta Catherine Barnes; their son George Doane Winslow was only a month old when Winslow died in Burlington of cancer. Bishop Doane delivered the funeral sermon on the occasion and later edited Winslow's sermons and poetical remains under the title The True Catholic Churchman, in his Life and Death (New York 1841, rev. Oxford 1842). (ancestry.com 24 Feb. 2021; Appleton; Doane, "Funeral Sermon," The True Catholic Churchman [1842]) HJ
