Biography:

WILSON, George (1784-1857: MSM)

He was born in Libberton, Lanarkshire, to Gressel (Ireland) and George Wilson and baptised on 20 June 1784. His parents, who had married in Libberton on 2 Mar. 1772, died when he was a child and he was raised by a paternal uncle at a sheep farm near Peebles. He received some education at the parish school before becoming a herd-boy when he was thirteen. At eighteen he was apprenticed to another uncle who was a cabinet maker in Edinburgh. In 1814 he married Janet Wilson (possibly a relation); they had at least five children. In the 1851 Census he was listed as a retired cabinet maker. He died in Edinburgh from a lung infection on 9 Nov. 1857 and was buried on 14 Nov.; the cemetery record identifies him as a cabinet maker living in Newington Place, Edinburgh. He was survived by his wife. His Scottish Laverock of 1829 is addressed to the members of the New Club, St. Andrew’s Square, Edinburgh.  (MSM; ancestry.co.uk 18 Dec. 2020, 10 Mar. 2025) SR
