Biography:
WILKINS, Charles Crane (fl 1789)
“Colonel Wilkins” produced only one known work, a satire intended to strike “against ministerial oppression” and reaffirm the values of British freedom. It is written in old-fashioned heroic couplets and has a curmudgeonly tone. Wilkins signed the dedication with his full name, praising his dedicatee “Richard Digby Paxton Esq. of Digby-Hall, Lancashire” for his championing of those values. Both names however yield no results in public records or newspapers and there are too many Charles Wilkinses and Richard Paxtons to take into account. “Colonel Wilkins” might be a rank either of the regular army or of the militia.
