Author: Wilde, J.

Biography:

WILDE, J. (fl 1779)

Judging from the contents of the slim 1779 volume Songs and Verses, the poet was resident at Newcastle or lived in its vicinity. The poems otherwise provide no clue to his or her identity. Populated with sailors, shepherds, satyrs, and swains—Tommy, Johnny, Damon, Delia, Celia, Molly, Nan, Peggy, and Bess—these competent pastorals anticipate the manner of the Della Cruscans, precious, light-hearted, and trifling: “But no nightingales are there, / Too inclement is the air: / Then what is it does chant so? / What! ’but blithesome Nanny-o?” JC
