Author: Whitman, Benjamin

Biography:

WHITMAN, Benjamin (1797-1840: ancestry.com)

He was Benjamin Jr. and is therefore sometimes confused, in the records, with his father, who was also Benjamin Jr. and died in the same year (1768-1840). His father was a judge of the police court in Boston; Benjamin was one of the children of his first wife, Hannah Gardner, and was born in Hanover MA. He graduated AB from Brown University before he was twenty: one of the two poems in his slim volume of 1816 had been read at his commencement. He became a lawyer and practised in Boston. No further trace has been found of him--no more publications, no record of marriage or children--until his death at the age of 43 in Susquehanna MD. His eldest brother Zachariah died at 51 in the same month, and their father five months later.
