Biography:

WHEATCROFT, William Gill (1758-1810: findmypast.co.uk)

He was baptised on 8 Dec. 1758 at St. Peter’s, Nottingham, the son of Samuel Wheatcroft, a paviour, and his second wife, Ann Allen, who had married in 1749. He became a land surveyor and was known locally as a poet. At some stage, he moved to London where he signed the dedication to the Duchess of Leeds of his only known published work,The Powers of Fancy (1789), from Hampstead. Although he seems to have had some acquaintance with landed gentry, and possibly expectations, he noted that he was “Forlorn, unfriended, to the world unknown.” He died in obscurity at Lambeth Walk and was buried on 8 Sept. 1810 at St. Mary, Lambeth. (findmypast.co.uk 7 Feb. 2021; ancestry.co.uk 7 Feb. 2021; Lenton Priory Estate Accounts [1959] 36) AA
