Author: Wells, Amos

Biography:

WELLS, Amos (1768-1845: findmypast.com)

He was born in Wethersfield CT on 28 Nov. 1768, the son of Hannah and Chester Wells. He became a Baptist preacher and missionary, joining his first congregation in Woodstock CT in 1792 and remaining there for at least four years. He spent most if not all his working life in Connecticut, though at the time of his marriage to Mary Campbell of Voluntown CT his place of residence was given as Charlton MA. The federal censuses of 1820 and 1840 record his residence as Newtown CT but newspapers reports and published speeches register his presence in several other towns and villages between 1792 and 1838. In 1816, for example, he was a "Messenger" for his church in Sterling and Coventry. It is not clear whether or not there were children. He died in Wethersfield.
