Author: Watts, William

Biography:

WATTS, William (fl 1830)

Though he published in New York, the author seems to have been English by birth: the preface to The Yahoo mentions its having been composed in bits and pieces during a period of "retirement, far from the metropolis [i.e. London]," and the text and notes are dense with allusions to and quotations from British writers and celebrities. As was customary, the author promises more of the same fare if the public should be pleased with it, but nothing else appeared under his name. No reliable records have been found; however, a William Watts born in Bath (or, in a newspaper report, "late of Bristol") died of apoplexy in New York on 11 Sep. 1851 and it is possible that he was the man.
