WATERS (fl 1778)

The attribution of the children’s book The Poetical Flower Garden, first published as a sixpenny booklet by Thomas Carnan in London, is inferred from the title of a later selection from it, Waters’s Poetical Flower Garden (1803). But absolutely nothing else is known about the putative author—not first name, nor occupation, nor sex. Darton and Harvey bought the copyright and woodblocks of this and other Newbery or Carnan books in a job lot in 1792. (Darton) HJ
