WARDWELL, Joseph (1747-1815: ancestry.com)

The Wardwells, Mayflower descendants, were well established in Rhode Island when Joseph was born in Bristol RI, one of at least eight children of Phebe (Howland) and John Wardwell. He married Elizabeth May (1752-1831) in 1769 and although several (seven or more) of their children died young, at least one, Joseph Jr., grew to adulthood. In 1777 Wardwell was included in the military census for the town along with some of his brothers. He owned land and was probably a farmer. He became a deacon in his church; the title is on his gravestone. He died in Bristol and was buried in the East Burial Ground there. (ancestry.com 13 Dec. 2020; findmypast.com 13 Dec. 2020) HJ
