Author: Walker, George
Biography:
WALKER, George (1772-1847: ODNB)
He was born in Cripplegate, London, but the names of his parents are not known. At fifteen he was apprenticed to a bookseller, John Cuthell, a Scot who had premises in Middle Row, Holborn. Two years later, Walker opened his own business, which prospered: he moved first to Great Portland Street and then to Golden Square where he specialised in printed music. Walker was married but his wife’s name is not known. He achieved fame as a novelist and, starting in 1792, published twelve novels in all, including one for children; several of these were translated into French. The best known is his anti-reform The Vagabond (1799) which targeted Godwinian ideas. He lived in London all his life and was helped in his business by his son, George (1803-79: he became a popular writer on chess). Walker is buried in Highgate cemetery. (ODNB 8 Dec. 2020) SR
