Biography:

VOSE, Richard Hampton (1803-64: ancestry.com)

He was born in Northfield MA, the son of Elisa Putnam (Chandler) and Solomon Vose. His father was a Harvard graduate and lawyer, but he died in 1809. Vose himself graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick ME  in 1822, studied law, and was called to the bar. He first practised in Worcester MA but moved to Augusta ME in 1828. In 1830 he married Harriet Greene Chandler (1811-61). The couple had two sons; the federal Census of 1850 records the four of them as sharing their home with Vose's widowed mother. Vose was a prosperous and popular citizen, elected to the state House of Representatives for two terms 1834-5 and 1838-9 and then to the state Senate in 1840-1. As President of the Senate in Jan. 1841 when the incumbent Governor of the state resigned one day before the end of his term, Vose filled his seat for 24 hours as the 14th Governor of Maine. When the 15th took over, Vose returned to his Senate seat and served out his term. He was the Kennebec Count Attorney 1848-56. He died in Augusta and is buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery there.
