VOKE, Rebecca, formerly WILLIAMS (1751-1835: findmypast)
She was born 1 May 1751 and baptised at the Independent Chapel, High Street Chapel, Gosport, the daughter of the Rev. Thomas Williams and his wife Rebecca Isgar. She married John Voke, a purser on HMS Actaeon on 10 Feb. 1789 at Holy Trinity, Gosport, Hampshire. They were both active in founding the London Missionary Society (1795) and she dedicated her volume Poems (1796) to it. William Bengo Collyer printed eight of her hymns, including "The Taheite Mission" in his collection, Hymns (1812).Her sister Lydia had married John Fenn who was also active in the Society and went on to become one of the founders of The British and Foreign Bible Society (1804). Voke's husband died in 1822. She died 7 May 1835 at Elliot Place, Bingham, near Gosport, aged 84.
