Biography:

VARNHAM, Edmund George (1815-43: ancestry.co.uk)

He was born in New Cross, South London, and baptised on 6 Dec. 1815 at St. Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, the only son of William Varnham, a wool-stapler and later a paperhanging manufacturer, and his wife Frances Muskett, who had married in 1807. He was educated at Basing House Academy, Rickmansworth. His father died on 22 Apr. 1833 at Surrey Square, Southwark, and left an array of almost fifty leasehold properties in South London to his wife with extensive provision for his son and his daughter Eliza. E. G. Varnham married Mary Anne Jones on 23 Aug. 1837 at Caernarvon, Wales, with his occupation given as Agent. They had three daughters. He died on 22 Apr. 1843 at Tyddyn Helen, near Caernarvon, “of a decline.” His will, which included bequests from his father and grandparents, was only finalised in 1849 after his mother’s death the previous year. The BL copy of The Dew-Drop (1834)  is a presentation copy from his daughter, Jane Mary Varnham, in 1855.
