Biography:

VAILL, Joseph (1751-1838: ancestry.com)

His name is "Vail" on the title-page of Noah's Flood, but Vaill everywhere else. He was born in Litchfield CT, the eldest son of Joseph Vaill (1722-1800) and his wife Jerusha Peck. They were Congregationalists and farmers. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1778, was licensed to preach in 1779, and was installed as pastor of the Congregational Church at Hadlyme CT in 1780. (Hadlyme is in the ecclesiastical district of East Haddam and the church itself, with parsonage, is in the town of East Haddam.) He married in the same year and stayed at the Hadlyme church until he retired in 1836, at which point he went to live with his youngest daughter and her family in Killingworth CT, dying two years later. Of the eight children he had with his wife Sarah Fowler (1753-1832), four grew to maturity and two sons became ministers. His only other publications are a few sermons. His colleague Isaac Parsons published a detailed biography with extracts from his journals and correspondence, Memoir of the Life and Character of Rev. Joseph Vaill, late Pastor of the Church of Christ in Hadlyme, in 1839. Vaill is buried in the Hadlyme Church cemetery in East Haddam.
