Author: Trevelyan, Raleigh

Biography:

TREVELYAN, Raleigh (1781-1865: ancestry.co.uk)

He was born on 6 Aug. 1781, the third of four sons of Walter Trevelyan (1743-1819) and his first wife, Margaret Thornton (1747-94), eldest daughter and co-heiress of James Thornton of Netherwitton, Northumberland, who had married in 1772. He was educated at Eton and St. John’s College, Cambridge (BA 1804, MA 1807). He entered Lincoln’s Inn in 1801 and was called to the bar in 1810. On the death in 1818 of his elder brother Walter Blackett Trevelyan, he succeeded to the Netherwitton estates and gave up his practice. He married Elizabeth Grey on 14 June 1819 at Barnborough, Northumberland. They had six children, three of whom predeceased him. He spent the rest of his life at leisure in Northumberland. He died at Netherwitton Hall on 12 May 1865, leaving an estate of around £8000 to his widow and surviving children. His religious verse found few readers at the time or since. Two elegies are, however, of historic interest and are more accessible: “Elegy on . . . her Royal Highness the Princess Charlotte” and “Lines on the Death of John Tweddell, Esq. of Trinity College Cambridge, who was Buried in Theseus’ Tomb in Athens”—i.e. John Tweddell (1769-99). The first participated in national mourning; the second recorded the shock-waves Tweddell’s death had had on the local scholarly community in Cambridge. (ancestry.co.uk 22 Apr. 2022; findmypast.co.uk 22 Apr. 2022; ODNB [Trevelyan and John Tweddell]; Morning Herald 3 July 1819; LES 30 May 1865; GM 1865, 2: 289) AA
