Biography:

TREMLETT, John (1781-1867: ancestry.com)

Poems on Several Occasions was published at Plymouth, Devon, by subscription, with a modest number of subscribers to whom the author, John Tremlett, gratefully dedicated the work. In a preface he identifies himself as “a common labourer, bred to husbandry,” uneducated, but a sober family man who loves books and spends “more in ink than in ale.” His name is a surprisingly common one in that county but he is undoubtedly the John Tremlett who was born and died in the civil parish of Bow, Devon, which is centred on the village of Bow but includes smaller villages and hamlets; a larger neighbour is Crediton. His parents were Henry and Elizabeth (Drake) Tremlett; he was baptised at Bow on 25 Dec. 1781. On 19 Oct. 1805 he married Tryphena Heard, known as “Fanny,” at nearby Nymet Tracey; several of their children, of whom there were at least five, were baptised there. In the census he consistently described himself as an “agricultural labourer” apart from 1851 when he and his wife were “receiving relief.” In 1841, 1851, and 1861 they were living at Bow with their son William, also an agricultural labourer, and members of his family: his wife Mary and daughters Mary Ann and Sarah. He died at Bow in 1867, aged 87, and was buried there on 12 May 1867; Fanny lived on until 1872 and was buried at Bow on 17 Mar., aged 92.
