Author: Townsend, Richard H.

Biography:

TOWNSEND, Richard H. (fl 1809-48)

This elusive author identified himself only as "a Citizen of Baltimore" on the title-pages of his four books, Original Poems  (1809), The Battle of New Orleans (1825), Rhymes (1836), and a novel, Scenes at Washington (1848), which broke the pattern and was published in New York. The pioneering bibliographers Wegelin and Sabin made the attribution. Although the name "Richard H. Townsend" appears in Census and other records, those records refer to men of another generation and no reliable information matching his likely birthdate has been discovered. HJ
