Biography:

TOOSEY, George Philip (1745-95: ancestry.co.uk)

His surname is sometimes given as Tousey including on the title page of his book of verse, Flights of Helicon or Petites Pieces [sic] in Verse (London, 1768). He was born on 14 Feb. 1745 and baptised on 27 Feb. at St. James’s, Piccadilly. He was the son of George Toosey (b 1715) and his wife Frances (former surname unknown); London directories give their address as Dean Street in Soho. He became an apothecary and surgeon. On 14 Jan. 1769 he married Mary Prior by license at St. James’s. They had children: records have been found for George Prior (b 1769) who became an apothecary, Francis Samuel (1774-1814) who was a solicitor, and Frances (1778-1810).  His books were published by subscription; Flights to Helicon is dedicated to Martha, Lady Dowager Chedworth, and she also subscribed to Sebastian: A Tragedy. Allibone states that his play was never acted. At the time of his death on 22 Apr. 1795 he was living on High Street, St. Giles, London; he was buried on 29 Apr. at St. Marylebone. His widow, Mary Toosey, married Frediano Matraye on 3 Nov. 1795. (ancestry.co.uk 12 June 2023; findmypast.co.uk 12 June 2023; Allibone; J. D.
