Biography:
THORBURN, Thomas (fl 1792-95)
Thorburn is a not uncommon surname in Scotland but it is very rare south of the border, and while Thomas Thorburn presents himself as a local poet, he may not have been a native of the north of England. He published two works, both in easy verse: Tynemouth. A Panegyrick Poem (1792), which at eight pages is too short to be included in this bibliography; and The Shotley Bridge Fox Chace (1795), which opposes the hunt for its cruelty and for its profanation of the sabbath. Shotley Bridge is in the county of Durham, and according to the author’s note lies about 14 miles SW of Newcastle. One man of this name was buried at the village church of St. John’s Chapel, Weardale, Durham, but the record of burial lacks a year. Nothing else has been found out about him.
