Author: Tevendale, Elizabeth

Biography:

TEVENDALE, Elizabeth  later Hutchen (b 1784: ancestry.co.uk)

Her surname is also spelled Tevindale. She was born at Arbuthnott, Kincardineshire, to Anne (Garrioch) and Alexander Tevendale. Her father died the day she was born, leaving the family in poverty, and Elizabeth went into domestic service at the age of ten. In 1808 she married a farmer, Robert Hutchen (or Hutcheon) of Boghill, Arbuthnott. His death (year unknown) led to a lawsuit which she lost, leaving her again in poverty. She is listed in the 1841 Census, living with family members at Bervie, Kincardineshire, but no other records have been located and the date of her death is unknown. BBA says that one of the poems in her collection, “Frostie Beardit Warlock Bodie,” has been attributed to a teacher, Andrew Malcolm, who composed it when he was living at Glenbervie.
