Author: Teasdale, John

Biography:

TEASDALE, John (d 1785: findmypast.com)

In a prefatory note to his Picturesque Poetry of 1784, Teasdale describes the contents as “mostly the author’s amusement in very early life.” His subjects are conventional for such occasional verse: Fancy, Hope, Spring, the death of a father, an “Adieu” to a coquette. The quality of the verse is not astonishing but is better than might be expected under such circumstances. He is not known to have published anything else. At the time of publication Teasdale was the minister of the English (i.e. C of E) chapel in Dundee, Scotland, where he would be buried on 11 Jan. 1785. It has proven difficult to find other reliable information about him. His name does not appear in CCEd although there is a John Teasdale who was ordained priest in 1774 in the diocese of Carlisle: that man, who qualified simply as “literate,” evidently lived on until at least 1801. He is not included in the lists of graduates of Oxford and Cambridge, or of the Marischal College, Aberdeen. His name is too common in the north of England, especially in the area around Newcastle where the book was printed, to narrow down the identification.
