Biography:
TAYLOR, William (fl 1787)
Although the poems in his book present the author as impoverished, unkempt, and living in a semi-derelict house, he was in fact a well-educated schoolmaster in Currie. No records have been located that identify his birthplace and the names of his parents. He met Robert Burns (q.v.) in Edinburgh and showed him his verses. Hislop describes him as an “overweening parochial schoolmaster.” (Alexander Hislop, The Book of Scottish Anecdote [1874]) SR
