Author: Tait, Alexander

Biography:

TAIT, Alexander (fl 1790)

He was a tailor in Paisley where he worked with Daniel Mitchell in premises on Castle Street. His poem, “The Author’s Nativity,” identifies his mother as “Betty” and says he was born in the village of Dewar, near Traquair. From there he moved to Tarbolton and then to Paisley where he was known as Sawney Tait. Little else is known about him. His strong antipathy to Burns is expressed in three of his poems. PP, which prints some of his poems,  says that his book is extremely scarce.  (PP)
