Author: Swan, John

Biography:

SWAN, John (c. 1815-c. 1832: Poems)

His book was published posthumously, and the preface is written by an unknown editor who tutored him before Syme entered the Glasgow Grammar School. Swan was a precocious and serious child; his “Discourse on Matthew” was written when he was ten. His note to the “Discourse” identifies his father as Andrew Swan and his grandfather as Walter Murray, farmer, of Cairnhall, Balfron, Stirlingshire. He was the only son of Andrew Swan, spirit dealer, and his wife Margaret (Murray) Swan on 20 July 1814. He began studying at the University of Glasgow but after one session, due to some unspecified family event, he was obliged to leave his chosen course of study and embark on another, less congenial, course.  His health suffered and he died when he was just seventeen.
