Author: Swan, John
Biography:
SWAN, John (c. 1815-c. 1832: Poems)
His book was published posthumously, and the preface is written by an unknown editor who tutored him before Syme entered the Glasgow Grammar School. Syme was a precocious and serious child; his “Discourse on Matthew” was written when he was ten. His note to the “Discourse” identifies his father as Andrew Swan and his grandfather as Walter Murray, farmer, of Cairnhall, Balfron, Stirlingshire. Even with these details, it has not been possible to find records of Syme or his family. He was obliged to leave the Grammar School and begin working due to some unspecified family event; his health suffered and he died when he was just seventeen.
