STRONG, Henry K. (1798-1860: ancestry.com)

Henry King Strong, son of Anna (King) and Noble Thomas Strong, was born in Pittsfield MA. After graduating from Union College in Schenectady NY in 1821, he returned to teach at the Pittsfield Academy. A few years later, 1827-9, he was editing a Pittsfield newspaper, the Argus, running a bookstore and a printshop, and publishing occasional pamphlets, almanacs, etc. In 1827 he married Eliza Glazier, with whom he had four children. About 1830 the family moved to Philadelphia PA. Strong edited a Whig newspaper, the Intelligencer, out of Harrisburg PA, from 1832 to 1837. He was State Librarian of Pennsylvania 1842-5 and in 1845 was called to the bar. He also had business interests in mining and for a time was president of the Washington Insurance Company. His real calling may have been politics: he was elected to the state House of Representatives as a Whig in 1852, served as Speaker in 1855, and after a short interval was elected again as a member of the People's Party in 1859. He died in Philadelphia and is buried in Woodlands Cemetery there. (ancestry.com 25 Oct. 2020; WorldCat; "Henry K. Strong," House Speaker Biographies, legis.state.pa.us 25 Oct. 2020) HJ
