Author: Strickland, Lucinda

Biography:

STRICKLAND, Lucinda (fl 1790)

Besides her name on the title pages of her two books, for the relevant period there is no known published or manuscript reference to an Englishwoman named Lucinda Strickland. Often misspelled Christmas in a Cottage, the correct title of her 16-page 1790 volume is Christmass in a Cottage. Strickland dedicated her poem to the “Author of Casina”—properly Cassina—(that is, Pollingrove Robinson q.v.), “not in its Drift,” she stated in a dedication, “but in its Diction.” It is perhaps worth recording that a Mrs. Strickland of Beverly, Yorkshire, is mentioned in the 1792 Life of Elizabeth Sarah Gooch (q.v.).
