Biography:

STRANGWAYES, Edward (1764-1846: ancestry.co.uk)

He was baptised on 9 Feb. 1764 at Kirby Fleetham, near Northallerton, Yorkshire, the eldest son of Edward Strangwayes and Martha Walker, who had married the previous year. Nothing is known of his education. He inherited the Leases farm estate near Bedale, Yorkshire, from his uncle. In 1776 it consisted of 127 acres but by 1851 had increased to 170 acres employing two men and a boy. The Strangwayes (variant spellings) family had been established in North Yorkshire for nearly three hundred years. He married Jane Walker (1785-1865) on 20 Nov. 1811, at Bedale. She may have been a relation on his mother’s side. They had three daughters and four sons. Their eldest daughter, Jane Strangwayes (1812-92), also wrote poetry. The Messiah (1830) was printed for him locally at Richmond with the preface dated from Leases on 10 Oct. 1830, distinguishing his candidature for authorship from other Edward Strangeways (sic) who were landowners at nearby Well. He died at Warren House, Leases, on 22 June 1846 and was buried at St. Mary’s, Kirby Fleetham, where there is still a monumental gravestone. He left an estate of around £3000. He was survived by his wife, Jane, who continued to live at the Leases, with her son Edward, who managed the farm, and two unmarried daughters, Jane and Anne.
