Biography:
STONES, William (1787-1840: ancestry.co.uk)
According to John Holland he was a native of Sheffield, but if that is so, there are no obvious matches in genealogical sources or Methodist literature. Nothing is known of his education but he became a Wesleyan Methodist travelling preacher in 1809. He married Elizabeth Tindal(e) (1788-1824) on 25 July 1814. They had at least one child who died in infancy. His wife died on 28 Dec. 1824; he wrote A Memoir of the Late Elizabeth Stones (1825) which recorded her spiritual journey. He was on the Whitby Circuit 1817-18 where he published a sermon on the death of Princess Charlotte: The National Loss Deplored (1818). He also served on the Norwich circuit in 1823 where he published the work listed here. He retired in 1836 to Madeley, Shropshire. He died on 30 Jan. 1840 at Ironbridge, aged 53, and was buried at Madeley on 4 Feb.
