Biography:
STILES, Ruth, later GANNETT (1765-1808: ancestry.com)
One of the eight children of Ezra Stiles (1727-95, q.v.) and Elizabeth (Hubbard) Stiles, she was born in Newport RI. In 1796, Abiel Holmes (q.v.), husband of her sister Mary Stiles Holmes (q.v.), edited the collection of verse, A Family Tablet, that included some of her poems under the pseudonym Louisa. In 1800 she married a widower, the Rev. Caleb Gannett, in Cambridge MA. They had one son, Ezra Stiles Gannett (1801-71). She died in Cambridge and is buried with her husband and his first wife in the Old Burying Ground there. Her great-great-grand-daughter Ruth Stiles Gannett wrote a series of popular children's books about Elmer the Dragon in the twentieth century.
