Biography:

STILES, Ezra, Jr. (1759-84: ancestry.com)

The eldest of the eight children of Ezra Stiles (1727-95, q.v.) and Elizabeth (Hubbard) Stiles, he was born in Newport RI. He qualified as an attorney and married Sibyl Noyes Avery in Vermont in 1781, but moved south for his health. He died in Edenton NC in August 1784 after what the newspapers described as a short illness. Their daughter Emilia Harriet was born in 1785. Sibyl Stiles married again about 1790. Stiles's brother-in-law Abiel Holmes (q.v.) edited the posthumous collection of verse, A Family Tablet, that included some of his poems under the pseudonym Eugenio.
