Author: Stewart, Janet

Biography:

STEWART, Janet (1781-1835: Richard D. Jackson)

She was born on 27 Sept. 1781, the daughter of John Stewart, a “Grocer in Water of Leith,” and his wife Janet Cattenach. Her father died on 1 Jan. 1796. She formed long-term friendships with the daughters of Dr. Robert Anderson (1749-1830), the literary scholar and biographer whose Works of the British Poets in 14 vols. (1792-1795) is still highly regarded. She published a dozen sonnets under the signature "Adeline" in the Edinburgh Magazine, 1801-1803, and several more ambitious poems were printed in The Poetical Register (1801-1807). Her only published volume of poetry, An Ode to Dr. Percy (1804), reflects the interest in the history of English poetry which she shared with Anderson’s daughter Margaret Susannah. She also published a novel, St. Aubin (1821). "Adeline" was first identified in the Monthly Mirror (1804). She died on 19 Dec. 1835 at Water of Leith and was buried  at St. Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh.
