Biography:

STEWART, C. (fl 1824)

Rodolfo . . . and Forty Sonnets appeared anonymously in 1824, dedicated to Charles Hervé, q.v., who had published his own Italianate poem, Cosmo the Florentine, in 1821. The author points out that it is “an inaugural effort” although a few of the poems had appeared beforehand in periodicals. Reviews were few and not encouraging: the Literary Chronicle acknowledged that the sonnets were not bad, but complained about having to endure too many “mediocre rhymes” to get to them. The work has since been generally attributed to “C. Stewart,” on what authority is not known but it is not HL. With such a common name, no further known publications, and very little internal evidence to go on, it is as yet impossible to identify Stewart more precisely. (Literary Chronicle 25 Sept. 1824, 616)
