Thomas Stephen was born at Ballaugh on the Isle of Man in 16 Jan. 1776 and baptised there on 21 Jan., the son of Daniel and Ellinor (Corlett) Stephen. Nothing is known of his education but he was ordained without a university degree on June 12, 1798, and served as curate at Bride (1799) and at Ballaugh (1802-9) before being appointed vicar at Marown (1809-27) and at Patrick (or Kirk Patrick, 1827-42). On 13 Apr. 1801 he married Charlotte Gelling at Ballaugh; they had at least four children. For some years he was also the editor of the Manx Advertiser. He died at his vicarage at Patrick on 30 Apr. 1842 after a very short illness, having preached as usual the Sunday before his death. He was buried there on 3 May. His wife died at Ballaugh and was buried there on 21 June 1844.
