Biography:
STEEL, Archibald (fl 1780-1803)
His name is also given as Steele. Very little information has been located about this Edinburgh author who wrote in dialect. He is identified in the Scottish Book Trade Index as a bookseller operating in Edinburgh at Wardrop’s Court in 1797 and in Candlemaker Row 1801-03. He and his wife, Katharine Paston, had a son, Archibald Steel, who was born on 1 Oct. 1801 and died in 1804. The birth record identifies Archibald Steel, the father, as a bookseller. He and Katharine may have married in 1792 but records are inconclusive. Nothing more is known. (ancestry.co.uk 26 Nov. 2024; findmypast.co.uk 26 Nov. 2024; Scottish Book Trade Index) SR
