Author: Spreul, Thomas

Biography:

SPREUL, Thomas (d 1854: PP)

He was born at Beltrees, Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, and taught at the school there but details about his birth and parents have not been found. He moved from Beltrees to Neilston, Paisley, and then Glasgow where he died. The Life and Experience of Samuel Kyle is based on a manuscript sent to him by a friend, John Stevenson. (PP assumes the manuscript was in verse but the book makes it clear that Spreul wrote the poem based on a prose account.) He published various schoolbooks about mathematics and language. He also wrote a long poem, “Clootie and Willie, or Gleniffer Warlock,” which is reprinted in The Harp of Renfrewshire, 2nd series (1872). It is not known where and when the poem was first published.
