Author: Spight, Sarah C.

Biography:

SPIGHT, Sarah C., later BARRITT (1813-1900: ancestry.co.uk)

She was baptised on 11 July 1813 at Woodham Mortimer, Essex, the only daughter of Daniel Spight, a miller, and his wife Sarah Threadgold, who had married in 1805. Her only brother, Henry Daniel Spight, died in 1833, followed by her mother in 1838. She continued to live with her father but on his death in 1842, she was probably left with no means of support and marriage would have been the obvious option. She duly married a Quaker farmer, Cornelius Barritt, on 17 Feb. 1844 at Ingatestone, Essex. There was no issue. He had a small holding of about 150 acres and employed around five men. Her husband died at their home in Hazeleigh Cottage, Maldon, in 1886, leaving a small estate of just over £350. She died on 16 Jan. 1900 at 98 High Street, Maldon, Essex, and was buried in the Quaker cemetery where there is still a gravestone. She left a small estate of under £300. She is identified by a handwritten note by the printer, C. Clark, in the Bodleian copy of her book. He printed only 40 copies.
