Author: Spenser, Ambrose

Biography:

SPENSER, Ambrose (fl 1829)

“Ambrose Spenser” is a name almost unknown to genealogical websites but there was a man of that name who married a woman of uncertain name at Marylebone, London, in 1839. Therefore the name remains on our author list although it seems more than likely, given that the poem is written in Spenserian stanzas, that it is a pseudonym. The census of 1841 includes an Ambrose Spencer (sic) but he was a mariner born in 1816 and must be a different person. In its generally encouraging review of A Day in Switzerland, MR noted that in this novice publication Spenser showed talent but needed to depend less on Byronic imitation.
