Biography:

SMITH, William (fl 1815)

William Smith “of Sunderland” appears to have ventured into publication only once, with one of many tributes to the Duke of Wellington after Waterloo. CR was derisory, suggesting that Latin mottos could not screen the ineptitude of his versification of old newspaper reports. After quoting a substantial passage of his “cobbled trash,” the review concludes with the hope that this first attempt will be the author’s last: “We feel for his subscribers.” In the absence of further evidence, with such a common name it is not possible to identify him precisely. (CR 2 [1815], 101)
