SMITH, William (fl 1821-29)

A cobbler in Haddington, in 1829 he published a number of shorter poems denouncing the work of the so-called “Resurrection men” who robbed graves to sell the bodies for dissection. The titles include: Verses Composed on the Disgraceful Traffic at Present, The Haddington Cobbler Defended, and The Haddington Cobbler Dissected.  His 1821 collection has several poems on the same subject. Goodridge gives the year of his death as 1831, but no other biographical information has been located. (Goodridge)
