Biography:
SMITH, John Broadfoot (d 1831: ancestry.com)
Not many records survive. He was a cabinet-maker in Cincinnati, probably originally from England and probably born between 1750 and 1760. He was married with at least one son, Henry Ryder Smith, who took over his tools and his business after his death, and a daughter, Ann Barnacott Smith, who is named in his will. In 1815 he defended his church, the Methodist Episcopalian, against an attack by a Presbyterian minister (The Accuser of the Brethren Exposed) and in 1819 he delivered an oration at his church on the Fourth of July--an honour that indicates the regard in which his contemporaries held him. He died in Cincinnati in 1831 and was buried in the Presbyterian burying ground. (ancestry.com 26 Sept. 2020, 4 Oct. 2025; Cincinnati Daily Gazette 18 Aug. 1831) HJ
